Salute to Connecticut’s Finest
Several Police Departments and Exchange Clubs have inquired as to the existence of any formal guidelines with respect to selection of “Police Officer of the Year” candidates to be recognized at the annual “Salute to Connecticut’s Finest” recognition dinner. Although communities and departments are free to use their own local standards, the following discussion may be helpful.
The Connecticut District Exchange Clubs sponsor an annual ceremony recognizing outstanding Police Officers from the numerous Connecticut communities in which local Exchange Clubs are active. The event is part of a program of service focusing on Crime Prevention. Police Officers are selected who represent high ideals and accomplishments in Crime Prevention. It is hoped that the recognition bestowed on these Police Officers will serve as an inspiration to those in the field to strive to similar ideals and thereby make a positive contribution to crime prevention activity in their communities. The key selection criteria for a candidate in any particular year are not necessarily heroism or spectacular crime fighting. Police Officer active in their community in many ways have been honored. On a local level the selection only focus on the basic question, “ If more Police Officers acted in the same manner as the recipient, would crime prevention in the community be furthered toward the ideals and goals of the community?” Thus, in many communities the select process, as administered by the local Police Department in conjunction with the
local Exchange Club, is utilized as a tool to lead the departments by focusing on quality police officer role models.
PLEASE NOTE THAT A District requirement will be, that your selected honoree(s) must be present at the dinner to receive the award. Any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at 203 575-9552.
